Tax cuts on pubs: Burnham backing British businesses

Recent headlines have made it no secret that owning a pub, club or music venue is hard. With rising costs, it has been estimated that one in eight pubs is in severe financial distress.

Many business owners are struggling, even some of the most famous. Jeremy Clarkson highlighted in his most recent season of Clarkson’s Farm the sheer cost of owning a pub.

He revealed that, even though his pub was fully booked and busy, the pub still lost more than £8,000 in its first quarter of trading.

While Jemery has a cushty Amazon pay cheque to fall back on, not all business owners do. That is why the Government has announced plans to ease the burden for people who own pubs, clubs and live music venues.

What are the proposed tax cuts?

Andy Burnham has come into power with some big plans to bring life back into British high streets and that starts with the backbone of the average high street, the pubs.

From April 2027, Andy Burnham has announced plans to give pubs, clubs and live music venues a 20 per cent tax cut to their business rate bill.

It is estimated that this will save the typical British pub £1,100 a year on its tax bill.

These rates are set to benefit nearly 32,000 venues across England, which is part of the Government’s wider plans to drive economic growth in every postcode in England.

This follows the 15 per cent relief that was announced in January for the 2026/27 tax year. The new 20 per cent relief is additional to this beginning in the 2027/28 tax year.

How will this benefit my business?

For many hospitality businesses, every pound saved can make a difference.

The proposed 20 per cent business rates relief could help pubs, clubs and live music venues reduce one of their biggest fixed operating costs, freeing up money that can be invested elsewhere in the business.

For pub owners, the estimated annual saving of around £1,100 could be used to offset rising costs such as wages, utilities and supplier prices.

Businesses may also choose to reinvest these savings into refurbishments, outdoor seating areas, entertainment or expanded food and drink offerings to attract more customers.

The relief is also expected to provide greater financial stability for independent venues that have faced significant challenges in recent years.

Lower overheads can improve cash flow, making it easier for businesses to plan for growth, take on additional staff, or invest in local marketing initiatives.

For live music venues and clubs, the savings could support more events, performances and community activities, helping to increase footfall and strengthen local night-time economies.

More visitors to these venues can have a positive knock-on effect for neighbouring businesses, from restaurants and shops to taxi firms and hotels.

Ultimately, the Government hopes these tax cuts will help high street venues remain competitive, protect jobs and encourage long-term investment in communities across England.
