SMEs Calling On Chancellor For Help
A group of small businesses headed by the brother of the Government’s former Chief Whip is calling on Chancellor George Osborne to cut taxes and rein in public spending when he delivers his Budget next week.

Graham Mitchell, whose brother Andrew resigned after allegations he called a policeman a pleb and whose father was Margaret Thatcher’s Small Business Minister at one point, has launched a campaign called The Fourth Agenda to give small businesses a voice.

The Fourth Agenda says it presents a “business-like approach to growth” and claims that many current politicians lack any commercial experience, so are wasting taxpayers’ money through running the country like “a wasteful expense account”.

Called The Fourth Agenda because Mr Mitchell believes that the Government is continuing with the same high spending policies as former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Third Way, the campaign says that since small firms create the wealth that pay for public services, they should have a voice in how it is spent.

Amongst other demands, The Fourth Agenda wants the Chancellor to allow small firms with fewer than 250 employees to be able to take on staff as self-employed individuals.

Mr Mitchell argues that if only half of the five million SMEs in the country hired just one person, the deficit and unemployment could be tackled, although he admits that he is “not a politician” but a businessman who has been “working in industry for over 25 years”.

In a video pitched at small business owners, Mr Mitchell urges them to join The Fourth Agenda if they feel that they are “taxed too much and the money raised in tax is not wisely spent”.
