The Autumn Budget Statement

29 November 2010

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has given his Autumn Budget Statement, in response to the latest forecasts for the UK economy released by the independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

Unlike in previous years, the Chancellor did not make any major tax or spending announcements this Autumn, with those instead being put on hold until the next Budget, which will take place on 23 March 2011.

Get Your Tax Return In Before Christmas!...

Personal self-assessment tax returns needs to be filed in January at the latest. Why wait until January though? If you haven't already given us your tax return information for the year to 5 April 2010, please do it now! This way, we have a chance of getting your return in before Christmas.

You'll also save on VAT, as the rate goes up to 20% next month, and you'll have more notice of how much tax you need to pay, so let us do it now!

New VAT Rate Starts 4th January

The VAT rate increase that was announced earlier this year comes into force on 4th January. From that date, the standard rate of VAT increases from 17.5% to 20%. The rate change does not affect either zero-rated supplies nor those supplies subject to VAT at the 5% reduced rate.

There are special transitional arrangements for transactions which span both the old and new rates. Detailed guidance has been issued by HMRC for businesses on implementing the change. See HMRC guidance notes.

If you require advice on the changeover, please contact us, and we'll be pleased to help.

Budget 2011

The Budget date has now been set for Wednesday 23rd March 2011. We'll be circulating our Budget Newswire the day after, as usual.
