£5.6m audit threshold applies from 30th March 2004 ....

The government laid a Statutory Instrument before Parliament on 9th January implementing the small company threshold increase to £5.6m, with effect from 30th January.

The main effect of the legislation will be to exempt almost 70,000 companies turning over less than that amount from the requirement to have their annual accounts audited. The audit threshold will apply to financial years ending on/after 30th March 2004.

New VAT invoicing rules ....

On 1st January 2004, new rules came into force regarding what needs to be shown on a VAT invoice. This is an EU-wide change and the new rules can be confusing. Customs have issued a business brief (www.hmce.gov.uk/news/bb-2303.htm) in order to assist taxpayers. Whilst Customs & Excise will be showing a 'soft touch' during 2004, it is advisable to look at the new rules now.
