New Alert on Tax Refunds Scam
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has repeated a warning to taxpayers to be on their guard for fake “phishing” emails designed to give crooks access to their bank accounts.
The alert, issued earlier this month, comes after a surge of emails sent by fraudsters following the 31 January Self Assessment tax return filing deadline.
The email tells the recipient they are due a tax rebate, and provides a link to follow to a replica of the HMRC website, where they are asked to provide their credit card details.
Fraudsters then try to take money from the account using the details provided. Victims risk having their bank accounts emptied and their personal details sold on to other organised criminal gangs.
HMRC stresses that it only contacts customers due a tax refund in writing by post. It says anyone receiving an email offering a tax rebate that claims to be from HMRC should forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it permanently
