Women's pension wait to be reduced

Women expecting a two-year increase to their state pension age are to have the wait reduced to 18 months.

Welfare Secretary Iain Duncan Smith announced on 13 October that the Pensions Bill would be amended from its current timetable to cap the increase at a maximum of 18 months.

The state pension age for women is to reach 65 by November 2018 and was then due to rise to 66 for both men and women by April 2020. That will now be delayed to October 2020.

An estimated 245,000 women had faced waiting between 19 months and 24 months under the original timetable with around 33,000 women, all aged 57 now, waiting two years.

When the State Pension Age was set at 65 in1926 there were nine people of working age for every pensioner.  There are now three people of working age for every pensioner and that is set to fall to nearer two by the end of this century.
