What makes a successful team?

In order for a team to work successfully together and to maximise its full potential, it is essential that a team consists of members with complementary skills, style and knowledge.

People normally have a style that they prefer to adopt when in a team and there are plenty of different models and processes that can be used to assess personalities and team styles. The one considered here is the Leader, Doer, Thinker, Carer process.

In summary:

1. Leaders like to take charge. They are outcome-focused and want to be in control.
2. Doers like to take action. They like to achieve things.
3. Thinkers like to plan, to look at all the options. They are impressed by a clever plan.
4. Carers consider the impact of the plan and the action of others. They focus on how people feel.

All four styles are required to exist in a team, with all being equally important. It is important to consider what style you and others are when selecting and working in a team – this is both in terms of a primary style as well as a secondary style.

What would happen if the team were not balanced?

- All leaders Conflict; everyone wants to be in charge
- All doers Lots of action; little strategy
- All thinkers; No action
- All carers; Few hard decisions
